At the D23 event in California this weekend, Tom Holland had the opportunity to talk to the crowd about the Spider-Man situation he has found himself in whilst at the event to talk  at a panel for the Pixar movie ONWARD, in which he voices the lead.

If you have been hiding under a rock and have no idea what the Spider-Man predicament is well it was revealed earlier this week that Disney and Sony were cutting ties over Spider-Man. The actor spoke about the situation whilst on the panel for the Pixar movie ONWARD where he shared his thoughts with the audience:

“It’s been a crazy week but I wanted you to know I am grateful from the bottom of my heart,” Holland told the crowd. “I love you 3,000.”

“It’s been five amazing years,” he told Entertainment Weekly magazine at Disney’s D23 fan event. “I’ve had the time of my life. Who knows what the future holds?”

He added: “All I know is that I’m going to continue playing Spider-Man and having the time of my life. It’s going to be so fun, however we choose to do it. The future for Spider-Man will be different, but it will be equally as awesome and amazing, and we’ll find new ways to make it even cooler.”

Holland is making reference to the dispute between the two power houses: Disney and Sony. According to reports, the conflict between the studios came after Sony turned down Disney’s offer that future Spider-Man movies be a 50/50 co-financing arrangement. In turn, Sony offered to keep the same arrangement under the current terms with Marvel receiving about 5% of first-dollar gross, and Disney rejecting the offer.

The news was soon leaked to the media and of course many fans around the world were worried and unsure about the future of Spider-Man and whether or not Tom Holland would be reprising his role as Spidey. However, Sony later stated that the initial news reports had “mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise,” saying that they are disappointed “but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer for our next live-action Spider-Man film. We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own. Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.”

So, Holland didn’t give too much away at the panel about the situation and it could be argued that maybe he doesn’t know that much about the events happening between the two studios or even if he does, he was at a panel for Pixar’s ONWARDS so that was his priority and didn’t want to take the focus away from the movie.
