Star Wars

We still haven’t even seen STAR WARS 7 yet, but we already know who will be in the director’s seat for the final film in the sequel trilogy… Colin Trevorrow.

The news has come as no real surprise, as the 38-year-old filmmaker was already rumoured to direct one of the upcoming STAR WARS sequels. The official announcement came at Disney’s D23 Expo and from the sounds of it, Trevorrow will be at the helm of STAR WARS 9.

“Today at D23, Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn announced that writer-director Colin Trevorrow will direct Star Wars: Episode IX, which is set for release in 2019.”

Trevorrow is most recently known for bringing the recent instalment of the JURASSIC PARK franchise to the film, having directed the recent hit, JURASSIC WORLD. It currently stands as the third-highest-grossing movie of all time – trumping Marvel’s AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON and this success to have put him in good grace with the powers-that-be at Disney and Lucasfilm.

“Colin is someone I’ve been interested in working with ever since I saw Safety Not Guaranteed,” said Lucasfilm boss, Kathleen Kennedy. “The power of that film paired with the enormous success of Jurassic World speaks volumes about his abilities both as a storyteller and skilled filmmaker. We are thrilled to have such an incredible talent as Colin join our family and step into the Star Wars universe.”

STARS WARS 9 won’t hit cinemas until 2019, so it seems that Trevorrow will have the time to dedicate to writing and producing the next movie in the JURASSIC WORLD sequel.

“This is not a job or an assignment,” he said. “It is a seat at a campfire, surrounded by an extraordinary group of storytellers, filmmakers, artists and craftspeople. We’ve been charged with telling new stories for a younger generation because they deserve what we all had—a mythology to call their own. We will do this by channeling something George Lucas instilled in all of us: boundless creativity, pure invention and hope.”

Trevorrow joins a rather exclusive club when it comes to the STAR WARS sequels, with J.J. Abrams calling the shots for STAR WARS 7 and Rian Johnson in charge of STAR WARS 8.

STAR WARS 9 will land in cinemas in 2019.
