Chris Hemsworth Reveals Dramatic Weight Loss For ‘In The Heart of the Sea’

Chris Hemsworth

Believe it or not, this is a photograph of the usually ripped and muscular THOR star Chris Hemsworth. The AVENGERS star has shown the world how he had to dramatically lose weight for his role in the upcoming movie IN THE HEART OF THE SEA.

For Ron Howard‘s new movie, Hemsworth had to reduce his calorie intake to as little as 500-700 calories a day for a few weeks in order to change his boy so dramatically and he certainly looks different to his Marvel superhero role!

The actor showed off the gaunt, ship-wrecked look he sports for part of the film on Instagram, joking in the caption, “Just tried a new diet/training program called Lost At Sea. Wouldn’t recommend it…”

In the photo, a rather dishevelled Hemsworth sports a full, ragged beard and cuts on his chest and face, which also has a reddish tint. His ribs are also visible on his frail physique.

Based on Nathaniel Pilbrick’s book of the same name, the film follows the crew of the New England whaling ship Essex as they find themselves battling a gigantic whale who seems to have a thirst for revenge. The crew face a terrifying battle against the elements, the whale and each other as they fight to stay alive during the treacherous journey. The story also inspired Herman Melville’s classic novel MOBY DICK.

The movie is set in the winter of 1820 and follows the New England whaling ship Essex as it is assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story.

In The Heart Of The Sea

IN THE HEART OF THE SEA reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

It stars Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy, Tom Holland, along with Ben Whishaw as Melville.

IN THE HEART OF THE SEA will be released on December 26th, 2015.
