It’s that time of the week again and we all know what that means…CASTLE time.
Episode 4 opens with a man sitting at a prayer altar, asking God for help to know he is on the right path however, it isn’t long before a hail of bullets shoots through him as they break a stain glass window which cascades around the body. The scene then shoots to Beckett making coffee, after making one, that is obviously not as good as how Castle makes it, Castle’s mother Martha walks into the precinct. She asks Beckett what has happened between them and tells her that she can count on him no matter what, I have loved Susan Sullivan as Martha from season 1, and she is witty, has fantastic comedic timing and always acts as the head of reason although she is fairly whimsical and unpredictable like Castle. The scene moves to Ryan and Esposito discussing them both taking the sergeants exam to move further in their career as they go to view the body, they meet a blind priest who tells them that the man who died was a fantastic guy and a very famous author. The scene then cuts to Alexis at the ‘PI’ office and she finds Castle asleep in his secret room, she tells him one of his favourite authors, P.J Moffatt, Castle realises that he can get onto the case and be with Beckett if he can just find a client.
Back at the precinct, the team are trying to figure out for certain who the man was, when Castle enters with his new client, Wendy Johnson, wife of the deceased. Wendy explains they had only been married 8 months but she felt very close to him, she tells them that he was writing a new book about the mafia. This then leads the team to look for mob connections, when they interrogate a mobster at the prescient, he tells them that the victim was actually a mobster who was around in the 80’s and he was in witness protection, Beckett then finds out from a publisher that the victim was not P.J Moffatt but a fraud. Ryan discovers that an Irish hitman had just landed into JFK, as Ryan exits the office Beckett moves papers over to show she is looking at the Vulcan Simmons case.
Ryan and Esposito go to the hotel of the hitman to see Castle having lunch with him, Castle tells the guys with the help of the hitman that he was not involved in the murder. The scene cuts to Beckett in her office meeting with someone from CSU narcotics to learn more about drug mainly heroin signature, Esposito thinks there is more to the victims scam then is being told and they discover he had an argument with another man who they go to pick up. After they leave the office Beckett calls evidence to find out if there is drug evidence left over from the Vulcan Simmons case. I am really hoping they don’t drag this storyline out for long, I love their long interesting, twist and turn storylines like Senator Bracken and 3XK but I am just not engrossed in this one and I would argue it is partially due to the dynamic of not having Castle and Beckett together. Esposito and Ryan go to question this man to find Castle has been tracking them, when they follow the man they find he is a leader of a pathological liar group. This was quite an amusing scene as the leader of the group reveals a truth of them all, he also tells them that the victim has told him he had found something big but needed proof before going to the cops, Ryan and Esposito tell Beckett back at the precinct they then receive a text from Castle telling them to come over. Once at Castle they see that he is having a party, which is meant to bribe them to give him information on the case so he can get close to Beckett. While at the party Ryan receives a text about the sergeant’s exam which makes Esposito furious and Ryan makes a deal with Castle to act as a mole and give him information in exchange for money.
The next day, Beckett discovers the victim was fired from working at city hall and sends Esposito and Ryan to find out more. At city hall they speak to a man who tells them that the victim said he was on a mission from God and he was recommended by the blind priest from the church the victim was shot in, Ryan then leaves to make a phone call to Castle and fill him in. The scene cuts to Castle and Alexis in the car awaiting for the priest to exit the church, they go to speak to him but as soon as they mention the break in at city hall the priest turns around and begins to run, it takes Alexis and Castle exactly 19 seconds to start running after him, who then disappears.
Beckett calls Castle to make run of the priest getting away from him, this was actual a very sweet moment, a moment where they’re reality was suspended and they could just be them again. Esposito and Ryan come in with the priest and they begin the interrogation. The priest tells them that he lied about being blind to move city’s and how he asked the victim to hack into the computer to change payments from the church, he reviles to them that the victim uncovers a slush fund that has pocketed $10 million. As they have no evidence the team seeks help from Castle as they know he has connections to city hall and the mayor. After condensing their suspect list down to one person, Castle suggests a coo where they show the suspect as conspiring to obstruct justice but tells Beckett she can’t be in it because of the blow back as Captain if all went well.
Castle suggest using the priest to make the suspect believe that they have evidence that the victim managed to obtain. Castle, Esposito, Ryan and Alexis then all meet at the church waiting for the suspect to arrive and take the thumb drive what he thinks would hold evidence. The suspect shows but suddenly the lights go out and the suspect disappears, Castle then reviles that he is hoping to catch the killer with more than just obstruction of justice. They go to city hall to discover the suspect has put the thumb drive in and they have caught him whenever when he gets interrogated he then tells them that he has an airtight alibi, Castle then figures out that it must be his wife. When they interrogate the wife it proves that she was the murderer and she admits it. Ryan tries to apologies to Esposito for taking the last captains exam slot, Beckett then tells them she got them both into the exam. Castle is waiting for Beckett with a coffee and she tells him she can never make it like he does, he tells her there is a secret ingredient to it but he won’t tell her as she won’t need him, to which she relies, well don’t tell me then. Beckett than admits to Castle that she never liked the PJ Moffatt book, they both smile and it is like it used to be until Beckett gets a call from Singh.
As I always say I can never not love this show, but I really hope things speed up with this Beckett and Singh storyline so they can get back to the storylines the audience loves.
