Beast review

Michael Pearce, a well known British TV director, has made a superb and imposing feature debut with this psychological drama-thriller starring Jessie Buckley and Johnny Flynn. The movie is set on the small island of Jersey and the rolling hills and eerie clifftops play a major role in the backdrop of the film too.

On this idyllic island, a serial killer is on the loose who has murdered several young girls disrupting the harmony and peace of the location. Buckley plays Moll, a young girl who is desperately unhappy and wants to escape the restraints of her family and bus tourist guide job. Her mother, played by Geraldine James, treats her like a child and as the story unfolds, we discover that this is with good reason.

After celebrating her 23rd birthday miserably, she accidentally meets Pascal (Johnny Flynn) who appears to completely understand Moll and her problematic past. As the murder rates continue to rise, so does the speculation surrounding Pascal and his innocence. He is the main suspect and that is when Moll’s loyalty is really put to the test.

The drama continues to unfold and the plot is seamlessly brimming with tension – something which Pearce has successfully included when he penned the script for the movie too. As the film draws to the final act, question marks linger over who the assassin is. The audience soon finds out in the explosive final ten minutes.

Aside from the super plot, great acting and the longevity of the suspense, there are many extras that make this movie worth the watch – but save those for viewing after you have watched the film. You can watch the FILM4 interview with Jessie Buckley and director, Michael Pearce alongside the audio commentary too.
