John Landgraf, FX’s CEO, has announced that AMERICAN HORROR STORY has been renewed for a sixth season. Premiering next year, Landgraf regards the show as having “unquestionably joined the ranks of television’s landmark series.”

With a cast including Kathy Bates, Evan Peters, Matt Bomer and Lady Gaga, the horror anthology series which has won 13 Emmy Awards involves the same actors playing different characters in reimagined stories each season. So far these have centred around a Murder House, Asylum, Coven, Freak Show and Hotel, but the theme for season 6 is yet to be revealed.

Landgraf said,From Murder House to Hotel, AHS has pioneered a new television form, as well as becoming FX’s highest-rated show, while also pushing every conceivable boundary of creative excellence and audacity.” He added, “This is even more remarkable because Ryan [Murphy] and co-creator Brad Falchuk tear up the playbook every year, challenging the entire creative team to come up with something even more spectacular, frightful and entertaining. You could not ask more of an artist, their team or a series and with every new installment they deliver.”

Murphy has even hinted at a possible two seasons for 2016. “Next year we might do a fall American Horror Story and a spring. We have to decide.” Murphy continued, “We’re doing something that we’ve never done before on the show where we’re doing two different groups of writers rooms. Some of our writers will be bouncing around but a whole different group coming in late August. The next thing we’re crafting up is very, very different than this. Not smaller. But just not opulent. More rogue and more dark.”

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: HOTEL continues its fifth season tonight at 10pm on FOX. Watch the promo below.
