One of the best loved cult horror films of all time is the George A. Romero / Stephen King collaboration CREEPSHOW, which bowed in cinemas back in the autumn of 1982.
Essentially five separate tales of fun and horror, which featured some key name actors such as Adrienne Barbeau (THE FOG), Ed Harris, Leslie Nielsen, Hal Holbrook and Ted Danson amongst others, plus horror legend King featuring in a tale called THE LONESOME DEATH OF JORDY VERRELL (in which he played a lonely farmer who finds himself dealing with a vicious space meteor with a very weird agenda) CREEPSHOW was an affectionate homage to classic EC Comics, which both Romero and King grew up with, utilising a mix of animated graphic comic-book visuals which linked each of the five tales on show.
Now, almost three decades since the original film, Shudder are reviving the concept for a brand-new animated reboot, A CREEPSHOW ANIMATED SPECIAL, which arrives on streaming platforms just in time for Halloween 2020.
A CREEPSHOW ANIMATED SPECIAL features two stories directed by Creepshow showrunner Greg Nicotero, with animation by Octopie animation studio.
SURVIVOR TYPE, based on the short story by Stephen King and adapted by Greg Nicotero, stars Kiefer Sutherland (24, Designated Survivor) as a man determined to stay alive alone on a deserted island no matter what the cost.
TWITTERING FROM THE CIRCUS OF THE DEAD, based on the short story by Joe Hill and adapted by Melanie Dale, stars Joey King (The Kissing Booth, The Act) as a teen whose family road trip includes a visit to the gravest show on earth.
Fans who remember the style of the original film anthology may be disappointed that it isn’t live action incorporating animation, but in fact the pure animated and graphic novel style of the updated version actually works in its’ favour, with very colourful and occasionally bloody images in both episodes previewed here, which are highly effective examples and with the likes of Kiefer Sutherland in the zone providing the voices, there is a lot of promise here.
A CREEPSHOW ANIMATED SPECIAL is produced by the Cartel with Monster Agency Productions, Octopie, Taurus Entertainment, and Striker Entertainment
The show will premiere exclusively on the Shudder streaming service in all its territories, as well as via the Shudder offering within the AMC+ bundle, beginning Thursday, October 29 shortly after 12:01 am ET/9:01 pm PT.
