Han Solo

Rumours that a Han Solo prequel is on the way were confirmed to be true recently. With this information came the news that the prequel anthology movie would be directed by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord. Who you may know from the very funny and creative Lego Movie. They also directed 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street and Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. This duo seems perfect to team-up with the screenplay writing duet of Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan. Lawrence Kasdan is most well-known for writing the classic, Raiders Of The Lost Ark. If this didn’t make him qualified enough to write a Star Wars movie he also co-wrote the screenplays for Empire Strikes Back (arguably the best Star Wars film of the saga), Return Of The Jedi and the forthcoming, The Force Awakens. His son, Jon Kasdan wrote and directed The First Time and on TV shows like Freaks and Geeks. This is the perfect team, all bases covered from the wise-cracking elements of the character to the deep mythology of the Star Wars universe. The big question is, who could play a young Han Solo? Let’s take a look at just some of the potential candidates.

1. Chris Pratt

Starlord

This choice is based purely on the fact that Pratt is used to playing a very similar role to Han Solo. His character in the fantastic Guardians of the Galaxy is actually very similar to that of the smuggler. Starlord is like a cross between Han Solo and Indiana Jones. The fact that he is a wise-cracking space thief that is fairly handy in combat makes him very similar to the character of Han Solo. The similarities to the character of Indiana Jones are also present. Remember that scene at the beginning of  Guardians’ where Starlord breaks into a temple on Morag and steals that artifact? It turns out to be a trap and he has to make a getaway. Is this not exactly the same as the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark? Look a the image above and then the featured image of this article, tell me there isn’t a similarity there. Pratt has been rumoured to be in talks to play a young Indiana Jones in a prequel to Harrison Ford’s other iconic role. With this and the fact that Pratt is one of the biggest young stars in Hollywood at the moment it is only a matter of time before his name comes up at Disney. In fact I would say with a fair amount of certainty that it already has…

2. Jai Courtney

Kyle-Reese-in-Terminator-Genisys

Jai Courtney is another actor that seems to be in demand at the moment. Courtney has been selected to star in a great number of big action blockbusters recently. He has actually starred in action movies almost exclusively for the past few years. He is currently filming on the set of Suicide Squad as Captain Boomerang and recently played this era’s version of Kyle Reese in Terminator Genisys. From what I have seen of Courtney he is very good at portraying the hero. In Terminator Genisys he was able to portray Kyle Reese with just enough toughness that the audience could believe him to be dangerous and competent but not so much that they couldn’t root for him as a protagonist. The character of Han Solo could be brash at times but what was so interesting about the character was that behind all of the bravado you knew that there was a genuine person in there. Which is why, even though he gave Luke a hard time and had a general attitude of not caring most of the time, when he faced being frozen in Carbonite we hated Vader for it. Courtney could bring this sympathetic action hero with a soul dynamic to the movie.

3. Miles Teller

Fantastic Four- Miles Teller

Miles Teller is a brilliant actor with a great range. Put simply Teller has a screen presence, you don’t need to focus too much on how alike the actor looks to Harrison Ford, you just need someone with a good acting ability that can easily adapt to a variety of roles. It is an on-screen presence that made Ford so successful. Actors like him take on the role really well, adapting to the cinematic world that is being created really well, I actually think Teller has this ability as well. His character in Fantastic Four is very different to his character in Whiplash but he looks to be at home as both.

4. Jamie Bell

Snowpiercer

Jamie Bell, who will also soon be appearing in the Fantastic Four movie is an undeniably talented actor. He was brilliant in Snowpiercer and it was this role that makes him stand out as someone who can create humour even in a situation that is very serious. It is this kind of ability that is needed from the acting portraying Solo.

5. Colton Haynes

Arrow-Arsenal

It all depends on how old Han Solo will be in the prequel but they could choose someone like Haynes. He is a less obvious choice as at the moment he isn’t really a A-list star. However he is gaining a fan following from his work on Arrow as Arsenal. Haynes does a lot of action scenes and stunt work on the set of the explosive DC superhero TV show so big action set pieces would not be outside of what he is used to.
