Incendiary actions against citizens of African origin in Brasilia and the reaction by key individuals in how they deal with it form the backdrop to the futurist drama-thriller EXECUTIVE ORDER (MEDIDA PROVISÓRIA), directed by Lázaro Ramos.

A lawyer takes action against the Brazilian Government for reparation of African descendants of slavery in the country. Incensed by this action of an individual, the government responds and signs an Executive Order effectively and without choice banishing anyone of that background, regardless of their contribution and success in the nation, to return to various African nations to begin a new life.

In this maelstrom of conflict, various locals decide to stand against the oppression and form an underground rebellion in hidden bunkers. The appointment of a new Minister doesn’t help matters as he is more than keen to see the Executive Order followed through….

Involving and gut-wrenching film, based on a theatrical production, that highlights the issues of race and slavery in a genre context that maintains the tradition of classic dystopian themes in many a futuristic Hollywood offering from the golden age of the 1970s when films like THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR and LOGAN’S RUN formed part of the box-office landscape. Great and spirited performances hold firm in a spirited affair that is more reliant on emotional, rather than CGI or physical effects.

The film also highlights the power of global unity and voices, as well as the undercurrent of where one does belong and where they come from, but also reflects on the issue of choice and democratic idealism that all cultures should be focusing on to move society forward.

An interesting take on an oft-told story structure proves very worthwhile.
