Xenophobic perceptions across two continents, coupled with the discovery that your Polish mother is in fact not your real mother, but somebody on the other side of the world forms the basis for the new horror comedy TWO HEADS CREEK.

Brother and sister Norman (Jordan Waller) and Annabelle (Kathryn Wilder) convene on their mother’s funeral at the butchers shop where Norman works in Slough. Annabelle is an actress whose face is all over billboards and advertising for a new product, but when they discover that their real mother lived on the other side of the world in downtown Queensland in a place called Two Heads Creek, naturally the pair wish to discover who she was.

A ten-hour coach ride with other tourists gets them where they need to be, but they learn quickly that their mother, Mary, has in fact died and the funeral is the day after, prompting them to stick around to pay their respects. Unfortunately, the respects – or lack thereof – of the locals is not as considerate or as forthcoming – and Norman appears to be blamed for a plague affecting all pigs.

…..oh, and it is Australia Day as well…..

This is a classic Frightfest entry that many who have attended the festival over the last two decades will testify to, the sort of thing that would play in the late night slot for those who would catch a night bus. Admittedly, there is a little un-PC quality about it (as well as an Operation Yewtree reference that Annabelle spouts off at one point that might make people gasp!), but this is a Southern Hemisphere horror offering and the target audience will quickly move on and embrace the film as a whole.

Its’ tradition is rooted in classic Herschel Gordon Lewis films like TWO THOUSAND MANIACS and any number of 1980s rural horror from that classic period of production like MOTEL HELL, MOTHER’S DAY and of course, THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE amongst others.

Not much that is new in the realm of horror, but it does deliver (or is it Deliveroo?) the goods on that basis.
