Well, we have all been there at some point as children. We walk around our favourite toy stores around birthdays and Christmas, looking at one particular toy or game that has been rammed down our throats via massive consumer promotion from the big leaguers who are determined to get every last cent from families and parents who want to satisfy their offspring, even if ultimately the bank balance suffers for the sake of love.

Well, for one such Melbourne-based obsessive, Darren ‘Dags’ Maxwell, the 1989 Tim Burton mega-busting adaptation of Bob Kane’s dark iconic hero who only dances with the devil in the pale moonlight to the tune of Artist Formerly Known As Prince, BATMAN (which ushered in the era of mega-budgets and even more mega effects and stunts), it was the start-off point for a collection that would impact on all elements of his life, building up a seemingly secret collection in a room that is closed off from the rest of his house, the only indication that it is a BATMAN shrine from the 1989 symbol pasted to the door.

Be it a cinema drink receptacle that should not be filled and preserved intact to a banner from BATMAN RETURNS that he can’t even unroll and put on the wall from a bus, Maxwell certainly has got his work cut out. However, having such an obsession will clearly impact on everything else. Yet, he does have a clean house and a seemingly supportive partner, so what gives?

Michael Wayne’s interesting but slight documentary will certainly be best appreciated by collectors and fans, but the rest may just be indifferent and neutral to the efforts. It does have some fascination, but this is more for specialists and the geek crowd.

BATMAN AND ME will be available on HD and Digital Download from March 8th, 2022
