BAFTAs 2019: The Favourite nabs 12 nominations, while Roma, First Man, Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star Is Born all follow with seven.

Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Favourite is indeed the favourite going into the 2019 BAFTAs, having picked up nominations in 12 categories. Following her Golden Globe win earlier this week, Olivia Colman gets a nomination for best actress for her portrayal of Queen Anne, while co-stars Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone are both up for best supporting actress.

Lanthimos’s dark period comedy will also compete for best film, best director and outstanding British film, as well as in a slew of technical categories. The Favourite was first unveiled to UK audiences as the American Express Gala at the 62nd BFI London Film Festival, before going on wider release on 1 January this year.

Following with seven nominations apiece are Alfonso Cuarón’s black-and-white childhood tale Roma, Damien Chazelle’s moon voyage epic First Man and the musicals Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star Is Born. Vice, starring Christian Bale as Dick Cheney, gets six, while Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman boasts five.

Pawel Pawlikowski’s mid-century romance Cold War, which was backed with National Lottery funding via the BFI Film Fund, got a total of four nominations: best director, best film not in the English language, best original screenplay and best cinematography. Two other BFI-backed titles are in the running for outstanding British film: Lynne Ramsay’s hitman thriller You Were Never Really Here and Michael Pearce’s Jersey-set mystery Beast.

Pearce also gets a nod for oustanding debut, alongside writer-directors Daniel Kokotajlo for Apostasy and Richard Billingham for Ray & Liz — both also BFI-backed titles. Meanwhile, The Field, from director Sandhya Suri, which was supported by the BFI NETWORK programme, is in the running for best short.

Peter Farrelly’s Green Book, set in the Deep South in the 1960s, ties with Cold War on four nominations. It was first seen in the UK as the Surprise Film at the BFI London Film Festival.
