On Tuesday evening, another movie premiere took place in London’s Leicester Square – and this time it was the turn of Tom Hooper’s stunning new film, THE DANISH GIRL.
As you can see above, we have many stunning photos from the glamorous event, which many of the cast and creators attended including Eddie Redmayne – in a rather eye-catching red, plaid suit, Alicia Vikander, Sebastian Koch, Matthias Schoenaerts and the film’s director, Tom Hooper.
Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne plays transgender pioneer Einar Wegener – later known as Lili Elbe – in the movie and is superb in the movie alongside Alicia Vikander who plays his wife.
The movie, set in the 1920s, is a love story about how Wegener, a painter, was persuaded by his wife Gerda Waud (Vikander) – who was also an artist – to pose for her in women’s clothes after one of her models failed to show. In time, he became Lili and started on the transformation into a woman.
The film is emotional, heart-wrenching and is guaranteed to bring out the goosebumps, as we see their beautiful relationship develop, fall apart and then reconstruct. The film is a dramatic roller-coaster of a ride – be prepared to bring your tissues – in fact, bring the whole box because this one is extraordinarily passionate and poignant.
It has been a fantastic twelve months for Redmayne whose stellar performance in THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING, for which he received a Golden Globe, Oscar and a BAFTA for Best Actor in the role of Professor Stephen Hawking. There is already so much attention surrounding THE DANISH GIRL, could it be possible he could repeat the same feat once more? We can’t wait to find out.
Either way, the true subject behind this film, regardless of the awards buzz surrounding it, is the heartbreaking true story of Lili Elbe, a man coming to terms with his true identity with such courage and grace with the support of his loving wife. We salute you Lili Elbe!
THE DANISH GIRL is released in UK Cinemas New Year’s Day 2016.
