In 2010, DESPICABLE ME was the big animation hit which was released, introducing the world to some unlikely stars: the Minions. These gorgeous, gabbling little yellow creatures assisted the supervillain Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) and stole the show with their haphazard ways in their tiny blue dungarees.
In the Minions’ spin-off film we travel back to 1968, in the days before Gru, as the Minions hitchhike their way to the Villain-Con festival on the hunt for a suitably wicked master. (Historically, the Minions have always managed to kill their evil overlords, from the T-Rex to Genghis Khan to Napoleon.) There they meet Scarlet Overkill (voiced by Sandra Bullock), the world’s first ever female supervillain. Scarlet takes Kevin, Stuart and Bob under her wing, bringing them to live with her and her devoted husband, Herb (voiced by Jon Hamm).
The film is partly set in swinging London, and features the voices of comedy stars Steve Coogan and Jennifer Saunders (who will play the Queen). Michael Keaton and Alison Janney complete the ensemble.Â
The film is co-directed by Kyle Balda and Pierre Coffin (who took directing duties on the first two DESPICABLE ME films).
The gibberish-spouting Minions have delighted audiences in both of the DESPICABLE ME films and we are looking forward to the possibility of a third instalment set to land in 2017.Â
