War Dogs

There’s no doubt about it, being an international arms dealer is definitely out there in terms of career choices. Sure it sounds dangerous, but the money and jet-setting lifestyle is worth it …right? Let’s face it, if you sit day after day at a run of the mill desk job, who can blame your mind for straying to the weird and wonderful life you could have? Ahead of the release of WAR DOGS in UK cinemas August 26, we’re taking a look at some of jobs which are just as unbelievable, from being a Helicopter Cowboy to an Island Sitter.

Directed by Todd Phillips and starring Jonah Hill, Miles Teller, Ana de Armas and Bradley Cooper, WAR DOGS follows two friends in their early 20s (Hill and Teller) who exploit a little-known government initiative that allows small businesses to bid on U.S. Military contracts. Starting small, they begin raking in big money and are living the high life. But the pair gets in over their heads when they land a 300 million dollar deal to arm the Afghan Military—a deal that puts them in business with some very shady people, not the least of which turns out to be the U.S. Government.

License Plate Blockers

In Tehran, there are incredibly strict laws associated with driving cars. One in particular enforces that only cars with certain number plates are allowed on the road on certain days. Because of this, an entirely new job has been created where citizens pay people to stand in front of their cars to block the plates from sight.

Cuida Carros

Car theft is quite common in some South American countries, so common in fact that you can effectively become a car bodyguard. A Cuida Carro is the name given to a person who is paid to guard a car when the owner is gone, the job is so serious that you have to be prepared to even go as far as to beat someone up to protect that ride!

Unexploded Ordinance Technician

This career is perfect for pyrotechnics and essentially involves blowing things up on a daily basis. When suspicious packages or unexploded bombs are discovered and are considered a potential risk, these technicians set the device off in a safe place. But before you consider a career move, you should know this job requires extensive training and qualifications.

Island Sitter

Next for a job which, astonishingly, requires no qualifications at all and sounds like the best job ever – in fact was actually named “the best job in the world” back in 2009. The caretaker of Hamilton Island in the Great Barrier Reef is paid £70,000 for six months, gets to live rent free in a three-bed villa with a pool and is responsible for duties such as feeding turtles, watching whales, and picking up the island’s post.

Helicopter Cowboy

In a career which is certainly not for the faint-hearted, cattle herders in the Australian outback risk their lives manoeuvring low-flying helicopters amongst trees and rugged landscapes in order to drive cattle across hundreds of thousands of acres of dusty land. A job that used to take months on horseback, now takes days in the air, and though the time saved may make up for the risk, would you sign up…?

Toques

Toques, translated to ‘touches’, is a popular, traditional drinking game in Mexico, which involves paying to get electric shocks. In Mexico City, men will walk around with boxes containing a sort of battery that can provide shocks of up to 120 volts, encouraging games or hoping to come across a group playing it.
