Spall’s achievement saw him triumph over other nominations for actors Tom Hardy (LOCKE), Joaquin Phoenix (INHERENT VICE), and Ralph Fiennes (THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL).

As well as the 57-year-old’s personal success, his film MR TURNER also won the best cinematography award. His success can be seen through his portrayal of landscape painter J.M.W Turner and his acting talent has already won him a top acting prize last summer at the Cannes Film Festival. This recent turning point in the actor’s career could lead him down the path of an Oscar nomination, with the National society of film critics having a history of indicating potential Oscar nominations.

Timothy Spall has reflected on working on the set of Mr Turner with renowned filmmaker Mike Leigh:

‘’This film is the seventh movie we’ve done in over 33 years.’’
