The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death is a terrifying, blood-curdling film that will have you covering your eyes from the very start.

The sequel to the 2012 The Woman in Black is a chilling story that will have you turning away from the screen from start to finish.

Set during World War Two, the film follows a group of evacuees leaving London and taking shelter in the abandoned, and haunted, Eel Marsh House.

As the film progresses, it becomes obvious that they are not alone and that she (The Woman in Black) will stop at nothing to get what she wants.

The overall narrative of the film wasn’t that great compared to the first one which follows Arthur (Daniel Radcliffe) in the house and finding out the truth behind the haunting of Eel Marsh House.

The sequel seems to bring an element of repenting and acknowledging mistakes that you have made and failed to have the same impact as the first film, but nonetheless, it was equally as terrifying and a true horror film.

Compared to the first film, there were more people in the house, with the evacuees and their two teachers and it was full of red herrings which kept you on your toes not knowing what was going to happen. This makes a big impact on the film and will no doubt have the audience jumping out of their seats and screaming when startled.

Another comparison to the first film is that the titular character, The Woman in Black, was hardly seen in this sequel, but the film focused more on the young child, Edward, who saw her first and becomes almost hypnotised by her.

The film has a small cast of very talented actors including Phoebe Fox, Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) and Helen McCrory (Harry Potter). Fox portrayed the young, troubled orphanage teacher who, as the story progressed, has a deep dark secret in her past that is brought to the audience’s attention through the chilling and terrifying events at Eel Marsh House.

The real star of the film was the young actor who plays Edward; Oaklee Pendergast. His portrayal of the recently orphaned boy, without saying a word throughout the film, was a true sign of talent and really emphasised the creepiness that children bring to horror films (might be a personal opinion, but children are terrifying in horror films).

As all horror films, the way of creating fear and tension is through the sound effects and The Woman in Black 2 does not fail to uphold to this, just like its predecessor.

The sequel brings back the haunting sound of the rocking chair from the first film and the creepy clock-work toys that suddenly start playing by themselves. These elements all add to and reinforce the horror of the film but not only do these make this film one of the scariest sequels to date, but the short appearance of the woman in black, whether it is just a hand or her face, truly make this film a true horror picture.

For those who have seen the first film and are confident enough to see the second one should be warned that there are parts that will have you covering your eyes.

It is a thrilling 95 minute film that is definitely one to watch for any horror film fans.
