BAFTA winners 2016

“I want to thank one British actor in particular, Tom Hardy, for your fierce loyalty as a collaborator & a friend.” Leonardo DiCaprio is crowned Best Actor and thanks his British co-star during the acceptance speech at the BAFTA Awards.

The BAFTA Awards were held on Sunday eveningĀ at London’s Royal Opera House hosted by Stephen Fry, which saw the box office hit THE REVENANT, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, dominate this year’s ceremony.

The sublime film was named best film at the awards and won a total of five accolades despite facing tough opposition from SPOTLIGHT, CAROL, THE BIG SHORT and BRIDGE OF SPIES.

Leading actor, Leonardo DiCaprio won the best actor award and delivered a lovely speech thanking his friend and co-star, Tom Hardy for all of his support and participation in making the movie:Ā “I want to thank one British actor in particular, Tom Hardy, for your fierce loyalty as a collaborator and a friend.” He also went on to thank his Mum for her support over the years and driving him over three hours a day to attend a school outside of the troubled neighbourhood he grew up in.

Hardy was notably absent from the ceremony itself despite his appearance in two of the biggest films of the year, THE REVENANT and MAD MAX: FURY ROAD. However, his performance for THE REVENANT has been celebrated at the Oscars as he is up for an Academy Award for best supporting actor.

THE REVENANT

With DiCaprio scooping the best actor gong and the movie winning best film, the film’s director was also celebrated –Ā Alejandro G Inarritu was awarded best director.

The Mexican director described the win as “overwhelming”. He said DiCaprio’s “talent and commitment” to the “risky project” had “kept the film breathing”.Ā

Leo and Ale

apocalyptic action movie, MAD MAX: FURY ROADĀ took four awards: for make-up and hair, editing, costumes and production design.Ā

Brie Larson won the best leading actress award for her role as a kidnapped mother in ROOM, but she was not in attendance as she is in Australia filming her new movie SKULL ISLAND. STEVE JOBS star Kate Winslet was named best supporting actress, beating double nominee Alicia Vikander, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rooney Mara and fellow Brit Julie WaltersĀ to claim the coveted gong.
