The long awaited series finally returned on New Year’s Day.

Two years? Has it really been two years?! Yes, it has!  Sherlock made its long-awaited return to BBC One on the 1st of January, a great way to start off 2014 for all the fans of the popular programme.

The start of the third series picked up with the titular character, Benedict Cumberbatch, crushing all presumptions that he was dead at the end of season two. Unfortunately, his homecoming didn’t go to plan in the way he would have wanted.  His best friend, John Watson (Martin Freeman), who believed Holmes was dead, was not too thrilled to see him alive and kicking once again after spending two years grieving for his loss.   But despite his sadness, Watson has moved forward with his life and just as he was about to propose and make Mary his fiancée, the surprise waiter was none other than Mr Holmes! A great and very hilarious introduction to the future Mrs Watson, who is actually Martin Freeman’s real life partner Amanda Abbington.

Niceties aside, Holmes has more pressing business to deal with:  intercepting an international plot, saving the life of Watson after being kidnapped on bonfire night and the slight problem of an explosive device under the House of Parliament that he doesn’t know how to switch off!

Overall, it was an action-packed, thrilling premiere of the new series which has ended the great drought since its last episode two years ago.  Fans of the show will not be disappointed as the series looks set to continue with even more drama and the most important aspect of all is the strong friendship between Sherlock and Watson looks set to be evener firmer after their long absence from each other.

The final moments of the episode gave viewers a glimpse of what is in store with the arrival of Charles Augustus Magnussen (Lars Mikkelsen).  No doubt the rest of the season will continue in such epic form and live up to the standards of the show’s loyal fandom.  We can’t wait!

For those of you who haven’t watched the episode yet, or are waiting for it to be broadcasted in your country, here is an interview with Benedict Cumberbatch talking about the new series:
