THE HOBBIT

It was only last week that we reported how THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES was the film to beat at the box office this Christmas and it seems once again, the movie has kept a firm stranglehold on its number one position in cinemas.

Having made its mark in the UK topping the chart for three weeks, across the pond in the US, the final instalment from the trilogy took $41,420,000 over the December 26-28 weekend, bringing its total US gross to $168,522,000 since its December 17 release.

Peter Jackson‘s epic film withstood tough competition from big new releases, including Disney’s INTO THE WOODS, which opened this weekend and came in third at the box office behind THE HOBBIT and UNBROKEN.

Neither of these new releases could outshine THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES, now in its second weekend in the US and proved that the trilogy is the big must-see movie of the year.

The Hobbit

For The Hobbit fans in Australia, their long wait to watch the film was finally over during the weekend after winning the Australian Boxing Day war with audiences piling into cinemas around the country en mass to see the big finale.

The third and final film in the Hobbit franchise grossed $5.59million on it’s opening day – the biggest of the year and fourth biggest in Australian history.

It easily held off competition from Disney’s BIG HERO 6 and 20th Century Fox’s NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 3, which scored respectable opening days of $1.3million and $1.1million.

It is easy to see why crowds are flocking to watch the film starring Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Ian McKellen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, Aiden Turner, Luke Evans, Lee Pace and Ryan Gage to name but a few of the cast members, as it is the most powerful, bravest and strongest film in the Hobbit trilogy and provides the fitting closing cap that the story deserves and even more so for the cinematic legacy of Peter Jackson.
