Saturday proved to be another good day for the cast and creators of THE BIG SHORT, after the won prize at the Producers Guild Awards.
The win will boost its Oscar chances, as the Producers Guild of America (PGA), which was held at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles’ Century City district. It has predicted the winner of the best picture Oscar for the past eight years and some bookmakers have already made Adam McKay‘s film favourite to be named best picture at next month’s Academy Awards.
The movie, set on the eve of the 2008 global financial meltdown, beat out a lot of its Oscar contenders including THE REVENANT, SPOTLIGHT and THE MARTIAN to receive the accolade at the annual PGA event.
Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt all star in the award winning movie, which has been released in the UK at the weekend. They play brokers who make millions betting that the US housing market will collapse.
The film is up for five Oscars in total, among them best director, best supporting actor (Bale) and best adapted screenplay.
There is no denying that their win at PGA is a good indicator of Oscar glory, as it has an impressive track record of giving top honours to movies that go on to earn the Best Picture honors at the Academy Awards — including last year’s BIRDMAN.
The non-profit PGA is a trade group representing US film and television producers. The awards are chosen by the 7,000 voting members in the organisation.
Pixar’s animated movie INSIDE OUT won the award for best animated feature, whilst on the TV front, FARGO, TRANSPARENT and GAME OF THRONES were among the television programmes honoured at the event.
Entertainment was provided by Lady Gaga, who performed her Oscar-nominated song Til It Happens To You to an audience that included Ridley Scott, Gary Oldman and actress Amanda Seyfried.
The Oscars ceremony will take place on February 28th.
