Denis Villeneuve - Sicario
Director Denis Villeneuve sat down with Lisa-Marie Burrows to discuss his latest film, Sicario.

It’s not long until SICARIO – one of the best thrillers of the year – arrives on the big screen and French-Canadian director, Denis Villeneuve sat down with Film and TV Now to talk about his latest movie. (You can watch the interview below).

In recent years, Denis Villeneuve has served up some of the most deliciously dark, action-packed movies with the likes of PRISONERS and ENEMY and his films never disappoint. SICARIO is yet another outstanding movie to add to his CV, but during his interview with us, he revealed that it wasn’t his plan to make another film in that genre, however after reading the script, in his words, he was “doomed.” He could not put the script down, which was penned by Taylor Sheridan marking his feature film debut and we’re glad Villeneuve didn’t, as he really has done the story justice and brought the dramatic screenplay to life in a captivating and heart-stopping way.

The prolific director also touches upon how great it is to have a movie which is female-driven with the superb Emily Blunt playing the lead role – and boy does she deliver. However, when Sheridan was presenting the script to some of the big studios, he did face some obstacles, as they tried to persuade him to change the gender of the lead role into a male.

In the interview, Villeneuve discusses how he feels it is a reality that is slowly changing: “It is still alive the idea that if you have a movie with a female lead, you will have less money to do the movie and it is tougher to sell.” He continued, “What I love about him (Sheridan), is that he has balls. He said, ‘No. This is the way that I structured the movie. It is based on a real woman, a real FBI agent in the United States,’ and it was very important for him to stay faithful to his main inspiration and I’m grateful for that.” So are we Denis. We cannot imagine the film in any other way and it is great to see the director continuing to break the mould and be willing to push great female leads to the forefront.

Sicario

In SICARIO, Blunt plays Kate Macer, a talented and dedicated FBI agent who plays everything by-the-book. She suddenly finds that she is pushed into an escalated and engineered battle between the American government and some of Mexico’s most notorious drug kingpins. As you can imagine, things are not what they seem and it is hard to tell who to trust…

Also joining her on the big screen is Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin who ooze an air of mystery and suspicion around them and they make the film so watchable.
