Secrets and Lies is a brilliantly gripping TV series and will make you wonder just who committed the murder.

The Australian ‘whodunnit’ series follows Ben Gundelach (Martin Henderson) who finds his neighbour’s four year-old son dead in the nearby woods, who then becomes the prime suspect in the murder case and tries effortlessly to clear his name as someone tries to frame him.

As homicide detective, Ian Cornielle (Anthony Hayes) begins his investigation, secrets are revealed which tear Ben apart, devastate his family and rocks a community.

Originally aired on Channel 5, this gripping, psychological drama has many serpentine paths that will have you wondering whether Ben really committed the murder.

The concept of the programme is the normal ‘whodunnit’ narrative with twists and turns revealing more into each character and their history.

Like many psychological, crime dramas there are many suspects that come and go throughout the first series that will have you constantly wondering who killed Thomas and were people’s allegiances lie.

Secrets and Lies stars Martin Henderson (Off The Map), Anthony Hayes (The Slap), Diana Glenn (Black Water), Adrienne Pickering and Philippa Coulthard, who all portray their respective characters brilliantly and add to the unexpected twists throughout the series.

There are times throughout the six episode series where you will think ‘why has he just done that?’ such as hiding evidence from the police, however this all adds to the exciting elements that make up the series.

Throughout, there are many instances where cause and effect really come into play and will often make you think that stuff like that would not happen in reality. However, the use of cause and effect works really well as it showcases Ben’s psychological mind set as he begins to wonder whether he really did kill Thomas and brings new suspects into the murder investigation.

The final episode is without a doubt one of the most intense finales to be featured in a series.

As the series progresses, you begin to side with the police that maybe Ben did it, but the series takes one more twist and will leave you speechless when the final credits roll.

Directed by Peter Sulman, SECRETS AND LIES received critical acclaim during its initial run and will be remade into a US series of the same name featuring Ryan Philippe.

Will there be a second series? Only time will tell.

Secrets and Lies will be available on DVD on November 3.
