It is a big week for Scarlett Johansson and she has many things going on both personally and professionally.  Not only is her baby bump growing, so is the amount of column inches she is lining up on the internet and in newspapers and magazines.  The American’s new film LUCY has lit up the box office and has topped the table against some rather big and heavyweight competition.

Scarlett Johansson tops the box office in the United States.

The film secured an impressive $44m since opening on Friday and outmuscled competition from HERCULES to top this week’s box office, resulting in the film more than making up for the $40m production budget.  Dwayne Johnson’s (Hercules) movie stacked up $29m, but has still fallen to make an impression on the box office at the moment.

The film is yet to be shown in the UK , but here is the new poster ahead of its release:

Writer and Director Luc Besson is best known for films like THE FIFTH ELEMENT, LEON, DISTRICT 13, TAKEN and THE TRANSPORTER.  New film LUCY looks set to be just as popular.

The movie, which also stars Morgan Freeman and Analeigh Tipton, tells the story of Lucy, who is a hard-partying, 25-year-old American woman living and studying in Taipei, Taiwan. She is tricked to work as a drug mule by her new boyfriend for his employer, a Korean gangster and drug lord named Mr. Jang.

Lucy delivers a briefcase to Mr. Jang’s hotel room that is handcuffed to her wrist containing a highly valuable synthetic superdrug called CPH4 that can increase the user’s brain function capacity.  The plot centres around the drug that makes her use more than the 10 per cent of her cognitive power.

In an April 2014 WonderCon interview, Besson was asked about the possibility of a LUCY sequel and stated:

“With Lucy, you’ll see the end of the film. I don’t know how we can make a sequel, but if the film is huge, then I will think about it.”

Could Scarlett Johansson reprise her role yet again in the future?

LUCY is in cinemas now across the States and will be released in the UK 22nd August.  Check out the trailer below:
