Cowabunga!  Excellent news for the cast of TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, after Paramount have announced that there will be a second instalment for the movie, with a release date of June 3rd, 2016.

Despite not receiving the best reviews from some critics, the film opened with a whopping $65 million this weekend at the North American box office, overtaking GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY who bagged $41.5 million during its second weekend.

Michael Bay will return to produce and the writing team Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec, who penned the first movie,  are on board again for the sequel script and to executive produce.  The only name which has not been mentioned thus far in the statement is Jonathan Liebsman and there is a big question mark hanging over whether or not he will be resuming his director role.

“To know moviegoers are embracing the Turtles with such enthusiasm is everything that we and all our filmmakers have been hoping for,” said Paramount chairman and CEO Brad Grey in a statement. “We are thrilled with this weekend’s result, the enduring power of this franchise, and the opportunity to make another one.”

For those of us who aren’t in America, we have to wait a little longer before we can watch the first one, let alone think about the sequel.

The official UK date for the first movie is October 17th, 2014.
