The 85th Academy Awards® will air live on Oscar® Sunday, February 24, 2013.

Well there were no major surprises when the Oscar nominations were announced on Thursday.  GRAVITY and AMERICAN HUSTLE lead the pack earning 10 nominations apiece.  The blockbusters were followed closely by Steve McQueen’s 12 YEARS A SLAVE, which racked up nine nominations.

With the three films recording the most nominations, it would be no surprise to see the competition dividing up between the three films and with the movies sharing the awards between them at the 2014 Academy Awards.  It was only on Sunday that the world saw the Golden Globes celebrate those films when 12 YEARS A SLAVE won Best Drama, AMERICAN HUSTLE took the the Best Musical or Comedy accolade and Alfonso Cuarón was crowned Best Director.

The hotly tipped DALLAS BUYERS CLUB is nominated in the best actor and best supporting actor categories,  and the film also picked up best screenplay and best picture nominations, taking its final total to six.

Also with six is Paul Greengrass’s CAPTAIN PHILLIPS and Alexander Payne’s NEBRASKA.

With five nominations is Martin Scorsese’s THE WOLF OF WALL STREET and Spike Jonze’s HER.  both scored five nominations.

Another award contender is PHILOMENA which is has been nominated for Best Picture, Best Actress (for Judi Dench), Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score.

The awards were announced by THOR star Chris Hemsworth and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Cheryl Boone Isaacs. The 2014 Academy Awards will be hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, which takes place on the 2nd of March in the Dolby theatre in Hollywood.
