Almeida Theatre have come up trumps in this years Olivier Awards 2014 nominations after featuring in 10 categories and stars of the big screen Tom Hiddleston, Jude Law and Judi Dench are also nominated for awards.
Top of the theatre pack in the 2014 Olivier Awards nominations are CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY and Stephen Sondheim’s MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG. Both productions have topped the list with a whopping seven each. There are 26 categories in stage, opera and dance and productions held at Almeida Theatre have enjoyed a variety of nominations in 10 categories.
The nominations were delivered by actors Nigel Harman and Leigh Zimmerman in central London, which revealed a strong bunch of contenders for West End musicals, as CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY go head to head with popular stage productions THE BOOK OF MORMON (six nominations), ONCE (six nominations) and THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS (six nominations) in the best new musical category.
To be or not to be, that is the question for Tom Hiddleston, Henry Goodman, Rory Kinnear and Jude Law as Shakespearean productions have battled their way through this category.
Tom Hiddleston and Jude Law are well known on the big screen, but they have enjoyed unprecedented success in CORIOLANUS and HENRY V respectively. Rory Kinnear joins the pack for his performance as Iago in Othello and Henry Goodman in Bertolt Brecht’s THE RESISTIBLE RISE OF ARTURO UI.
In the best actress category, Hayley Atwell (THE PRIDE), Anna Chancellor (PRIVATE LIVES), Judi Dench (PETER AND ALICE) and Lesley Manville (GHOSTS) will also be hoping to get their hands on an award for their performances.
The public has also had their say in one award – the listeners from BBC Radio 2 who voted for long running productions in the West End. The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables. Matilda the Musical and Wicked all topping the nominations in that category.
The ceremony will take place on Sunday 13th April. Who will you be hoping walks away with a coveted gong this year?
