The Gambler

Paramount Pictures UK has released the new trailer for THE GAMBLER, starring Mark Wahlberg, John Goodman, Brie Larson, Michael Kenneth Williams and Jessica Lange.

It was only a couple of weeks ago we brought you news of the red band trailer and now we get to see a little bit more from the film in the latest trailer outing.

THE GAMBLER follows a literature professor whose gaming addiction lands him in trouble with his girlfriend, his family and some nasty gangsters. The Departed’s William Monahan wrote the new iteration of the script, which was penned for the original 1974 version by James Toback.

Mark Wahlberg plays Jim Bennett – a risk taker. Both an English professor and a high-stakes gambler, Bennett bets it all when he borrows from a gangster (Michael Kenneth Williams) and offers his own life as collateral. Always one step ahead, Bennett pits his creditor against the operator of a gambling ring (Alvin Ing) and leaves his dysfunctional relationship with his wealthy mother (Jessica Lange) in his wake. He plays both sides, immersing himself in an illicit, underground world while garnering the attention of Frank (John Goodman), a loan shark with a paternal interest in Bennett’s future. As his relationship with a student (Brie Larson) deepens, Bennett must take the ultimate risk for a second chance…

Wahlberg’s physical transformation for the role is impressive as the actor who we know to be more bulky in TRANSFORMERS and PAIN & GAIN lost a lot of weight and muscle mass to take on this part.

THE GAMBLER is out in the UK December 19th.
