Co-creators Cein McGillicuddy and Andy Kinnear have added to BBC Three’s comedy list with new sitcom TOP COPPERS, inspired by crime series from the 70s and 80s.

Set in the fictional world of Justice City, the six-part series follows redheads John Mahogany (Steen Raskopoulos) and his partner Mitch Rust (John Kearns). Frequently on their final warning for making “too many mistakes”, the destructive duo solve a new crime each week but not without facing countless obstacles along the way. Guest stars include James Fleet, Tom Bennett and Kayvan Novak.

McGillicuddy and Kinnear’s creations are a contrast to the “typically masculine environment” that comes with the cop genre. McGillicuddy explained, “there is something nice in modern day men like Mahogany – he’s a lot more cerebral and sensitive. But the cop show era was the era when men were supposed to be men.”

TOP COPPERS continues next Wednesday at 10pm. Watch the first episode on BBC iPlayer.
