What an outstanding outcome at the EMMY AWARDS for Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman and all of those involved with SHERLOCK HOLMES.

Sherlock Holmes
Benedict Cumberbatch, right, and Martin Freeman won for Lead Actor and Supporting Actor In A Miniseries Or Movie for Sherlock: His Last Vow at the Emmys in Los Angeles on Monday.

On Monday evening all eyes were firmly glued to the 66th ANNUAL EMMY AWARDS (the first time since 1976 the Awards were held on a Monday night) to see which shows would come out on top and delightfully for us, it was SHERLOCK HOLMES.  Well done boys!

Team SHERLOCK cleaned up the awards after scooping wins for 7 out of the the 12 categories they were nominated in.

In-demand actor of the moment, Benedict Cumberbatch, won Outstanding Lead Actor in a TV Movie/Miniseries for the popular BBC series.  This is the actor’s first Emmy win after losing in the category for the previous two years, however, he was not in attendance to accept the award.

The Brit scooped the award ahead of frontrunner Mark Ruffalo (THE NORMAL HEART), along with Billy Bob Thornton (FARGO), Chiwetel Ejiofor (DANCING ON THE EDGE), Idris Elba (LUTHER) and Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman (FARGO).

Cumberbatch’s onscreen sidekick, Martin Freeman who plays John Watson, won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a TV Movie / Miniseries.

It wasn’t just the actors who collected items for their mantelpiece, series creator Steven Moffat won Outstanding Writing for TV Movie / Miniseries for Sherlock:  His Last Vow.

Backstage, Moffat told reporters:

“I didn’t think we’d win anything, genuinely… very shocked and surprised.”

He did pointt  out that the show has won plenty of awards outside the United States, but they had almost written off any chance of winning an Emmy as the show is ageing.

“We’re delighted that we’ve made it here and hopefully that it will get more people watching.”

As for how they plan to top last year’s highly rated season, Moffat declared, “We have a plan to top it, and I do think our plan is devastating. We practically reduced our cast to tears by revealing the plan.”

We can’t wait!

Here is a list of all of the gongs they collected on Monday night:
