Doing whatever a spider can….

At Cinemacon in Las Vegas, Marvel and Sony officially revealed the title of their first joint production solo Spider-Man movie to be…drum roll…Spider-Man:Homecoming.

In the comics, there’s relatively few storylines titled ‘Homecoming.’ One tells the story of Peter Parker returning from the dead to reclaim his body from Doctor Octopus. Another is a single issue story, that focuses on Spider-Man readjusting to life on Earth after being away on an alien world for a year. It also introduces Spidey’s black costume aka the the Venom symbiote that was totally ruined in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3.  So, more likely ‘Homecoming’ is a less than subtle reference to Spider-Man being a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe or a hint that there will be dancing.

Unsurprisingly, Kevin Feige said there were plans for other MCU characters to appear in Spider-Man’s feature. As Spidey appears to be a card carrying member of Team Iron Man in the latest Captain America: Civil War trailer, there’s little speculation as to whom he could be referring.

More casting news followed as it was announced that Laura Harrier and Tony Revolori had been cast. The former in a ‘significant’ role, and the latter as ‘part of Peter Parker’s high school crowd.’ They join Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, and Zendaya as Michelle.

It’s also rumoured that former Batman, Michael Keaton is in talks to star as the movie’s villain. Speculatively, the Vulture is being touted to be a villain or ‘the villain’ of the movie. The Vulture (Adrian Toomes) first appeared in ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ #2 and has fought the character on many occasions, most recently acting in a Fagin-like way recruiting street kids to steal for him in mini-vulture costumes. Essentially, he’s an evil OAP who got tired of bird spotting and gardening.

Spider-Man debuts in Captain America:Civil War on April 29th and Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into cinemas on July 7th 2017.
