Marvel Phase 3
Studio President Kevin Feige shines a bright light on Marvel’s future

The Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer is only a week old, and now Marvel have announced an epic list of Marvel properties guaranteed to keep the study busy until 2019.

The announcement was made at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood on the 28th October. Leading the announcement was the head of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige, who took to the stage to announce a whopping NINE titles to follow next year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant Man, both of which will conclude Phase 2.

The following films announced will be part of Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe:

Captain America: Civil War – May 6, 2016:

Captain America Civil War - Marvel Phase 3

The first film in Phase 3’s roster. We know Robert Downey Jr. will be joining the cast as Tony Stark/Iron Man, and given the title, I’m going to take a wild stab in the dark and assume that the film will be an adaptation of one of Marvel’s most iconic storylines, which saw heroes of the Marvel Universe on two sides of a war, with Captain America and Iron Man leading the charges.

Doctor Strange – November 4, 2016:

doctor strange - Marvel Phase 3

Doctor Strange will be a fresh line-up to the MCU, lending more focus to the supernatural side of Marvel, which has so far gone unexplored, so Doctor Strange will no doubt shed some light on that. Of course, just when we think the 2-year wait is going to be hard enough, reports imply acting behemoth Benedict Cumberbatch will take on the Sorcerer Supreme. From Baker Street to Starfleet to Middle-Earth, Cumberbatch can hopefully tick Marvel off that dwindling list.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 – May 5, 2017:

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - Marvel Phase 3

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 blew everyone away with what some may consider the ‘anti-Avengers’, so the wait for the human tree and gun-toting raccoon is going to be an exhausting one.

Thor: Ragnarok – July 28, 2017:

Thor Ragnarok - Marvel Phase 3

Another Marvel property that borrows its name from a Marvel storyline. However, its a little too early to tell how closely the film follows the story (if at all). On the plus side, we know Tom Hiddleston will return as Thor’s scheming brother Loki.

Black Panther – November 3, 2017:

Black Panther - Marvel Phase 3

After a long wait, and endless casting speculation, we finally have tribal chief T’Challa in the form of American actor Chadwick Boseman, whose work has mostly been linked to American television. For those who can’t afford to wait a full three years, fear not; the Panther will make an appearance alongside Captain America and Iron Man in Captain American: Civil War.

Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1, May 2018, and Part 2, May 2019:

Avengers Infinity War - Marvel Phase 3

These days, a Marvel Phase is not complete without an Avengers film. And in light of the increased line-up this phase round, fans have been awarded with a 2-part Avengers 3. It was ony a matter of time before the 2-film trend reached Marvel. But with a title like Infinity War, a simple sum goes to mind. Thanos + Infinity Gauntlet = UNPRECEDENTED CHAOS. 2 films? A year wait in-between? Bring it.

Captain Marvel – July 6, 2018:

Captain Marvel - Marvel Phase 3

Captain Marvel follows the first part of Avengers: Infinity War. Yet which character will assume the identity in the film remains to be seen.

Inhumans – November 2, 2019:

Inhumans - Marvel Phase 3

Inhumans will take the Marvel Cinematic Universe even deeper into the cosmos with the superhuman group Inhumans. Clearly, Marvel is playing the same risk as Guardians of the Galaxy in taking a lesser-known property and hoping it pays off. Can they repeast Guardian’s success? Time will tell…

All of a sudden, the next five blockbuster seasons suddenly feel much more competitive…

  2. […] There will be lots of opportunities to see Elba, Hiddleston and Hemsworth together in the future, as after the successes of the thunder god’s own series, which started with THOR in 2011, and with the duo appearing in the first Avengers movie, where the 33-year-old Hiddleston caused even more mischief, we now know that we WILL see them reunited in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, which is scheduled for release on May 1st 2015. If that isn’t enough exciting news, we know there will be a third Thor film RAGNAROK which hits cinemas in July 28th 2017 as revealed in Marvel’s Phase 3 plans. […]
