Lionsgate marks all-time record for UK distributor ahead of record breaking release of La La Land

Lionsgate, a premier next generation global content leader, received 18 BAFTA nominations today including 11, for Damien Chazelle‘s critically-acclaimed La La Land which is released on Thursday 12th January across the UK and Ireland.

Hacksaw Ridge received 5 nominations, including Leading Actor for Andrew Garfield. Director Ben Williams and Writer John Donnelly were nominated in the Outstanding British Debut category for their work on The Pass and the blockbuster Deepwater Horizon received a nomination in the Sound category.

The total of 18 nominations marks a company best for Lionsgate UK, a record previously owned in 2009 counting 8 nominations for Kathryn Bigelow‘s The Hurtlocker (co-released with Studio Canal in 2008), followed by the 6 nominations George Clooney‘s Goodnight and Good Luck received at the 2006 BAFTA Awards and 5 nominations for John Crowley‘s Brooklyn in 2016.

Following the record breaking seven wins for seven nominations at the Golden Globes this weekend I’m delighted that BAFTA have further recognized LA LA LAND ahead of our release this week with its 11 nominations. Hacksaw Ridge is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss [Andrew Garfield] who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
