Leonardo DiCaprio oscar

Leonardo DiCaprio finally grabs the golden gong…

It’s been a long running joke, born of previous Academy snubs resulting in meme creations which poked fun at the TITANIC heartthrob. But you know what they say, six times a charm!

The big moment finally arrived for the actor, who had so much support from many critics, fellow actors and fans during the build-up to the ceremony. Take a look at his acceptance speech below:

During tonight’s 88th Academy Awards Ceremony hosted by Chris Rock, Leonardo DiCaprio was faced with tough competition from Matt Damon (THE MARTIAN), Bryan Cranston (TURBO), Michael Fassbender (STEVE JOBS) and Eddie Redmayne (THE DANISH GIRL). His second Oscar nomination, Redmayne was a strong contender having won the same category in 2014 for his physically demanding portrayal of Professor Stephen Hawkins in THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING.

But to the delight of all who have followed DiCaprio on his Oscar journey, the actor triumphed in the Best Actor category for his leading role in THE REVENANT – a film about D̶i̶C̶a̶p̶r̶i̶o̶’̶s̶ ̶s̶t̶r̶u̶g̶g̶l̶e̶ ̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶o̶n̶g̶o̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶f̶i̶g̶h̶t̶ ̶f̶o̶r̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶a̶c̶c̶l̶a̶i̶m̶e̶d̶ ̶a̶w̶a̶r̶d American frontier Hugh Glass who must battle to survive the wilderness after he is abandoned and left for dead by his men following a bear attack.

“Are you not entertained? Give me my damn Oscar.”

In an interview with Press Association prior to the Oscars, Kate Winslet showed solidarity for DiCaprio and predicted his win, “I feel very strongly that it may possibly be Leo’s year and I’m his closest friend in the world, and I just couldn’t imagine not being there to support him.” And right she was, with the actor walking away with his first BAFTA for Best Leading Actor in THE REVENANT earlier this month.

DiCaprio’s first Oscar nomination came for his supporting role alongside Johnny Depp in the 1993 film WHAT’S EATING GILBERT GRAPE. He was then nominated for his leading role in THE AVIATOR (2004), BLOOD DIAMOND (2006), and THE WOLF OF WALL STREET (2013).

The 88th Academy Awards continues on Sky channel 304.
