Karl Urban

Through the stormy darkness….

The Wrap reports that Karl Urban of STAR TREK and DREDD fame has replaced DEXTER star Michael C Hall in Disney’s PETE’S DRAGON remake, who has exited the project due to scheduling conflicts.

Disney’s 1977 original PETE’S DRAGON musical which combined live-action and animation to tell the story of Pete (an orphan) who arrives alone in the town of Passamaquoddy. Elliott (an animated dragon) becomes his only friend and protector and only appears visible to Pete himself. The feature was directed by David Lowery, and starred: Oakes Feyley, Bryce Dallas Howard, Robert Redford and Wes Bentley.

The remake is rumoured to be slightly different than the original, foregoing traditional animation in favour of CGI. Music will also be missing from the new PETE’S DRAGON allowing fans of the original to breathe a sigh of relief at the revelation that a pop/hip-hop/electronic remix of ‘Candle on the Water’ will never exist.

The plot of PETE’S DRAGON the remake is also said to be dissimilar from that of the original, with Pete being raised by a dragon in the woods after the death of his parents. With the similarities this rumour shares with the majority of GRIMM FAIRY TALES and THE JUNGLE BOOK, expect the roles of the Big Bad Wolf and Bagheera to be cast fairly soon.

PETE’S DRAGON is expected to arrive in cinemas August 12th 2016.
