The star heaped praise for Christopher Lee – his friend and inspiration, before handing him the BFI Fellowship honour.

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp was a surprise guest on Saturday night, appearing on stage to rapturous applause to present Christopher Lee with his award.

The American actor was thrilled to be given the opportunity to present the award describing it as “a great honour to be here.”

Depp labelled the honourary recipient as a ‘very great man indeed’ and shared how he feels about Lee, who has been a wonderful inspiration to him over the years and for many other actors and filmmakers.

The 50-year-old American was not short of compliments for his big screen hero, explaining how it was a childhood dream come true to work with and learn from the actor.  The praise continued to be lavished on Lee, distinguishing him as ‘a true gentleman, a national treasure and a true artist.’

Our favourite closing part?  The finish: “I love you,” Depp said.

After receiving a long and very worthy standing ovation, Lee said on stage: “Johnny, I don’t know what to say. I didn’t know you were going to be here. It is a very emotional moment for me as you can probably hear.”

The two stars have worked together on numerous occasions including in CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, SLEEPY HOLLOW and DARK SHADOWS.
