The Hobbit

Peter Jackson’s final installment of The Hobbit trilogy is proving to be a popular success in the UK and internationally.

THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES stormed to the top of the UK box office during its opening weekend and the film doesn’t look like it will be budging after a second successful weekend, beating off new releases to retain the number one spot once again, as its predecessors previously did.

Last week alone, BOTFA secured another £5.4m ($8.4m) as it crossed the £20m mark after just ten days of release, bringing its total to £20.3m ($31.7m) in the UK alone.

Of course, the film may have been enjoying its second week in the UK, but across the pond it was the opening weekend for the epic movie – and it proved to be just as successful over there.  THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES scored a huge $90.6m five-day opening to top the US box office this weekend.

The film’s debut compares favourably to previous installments AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY and THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG, which bowed with $84.6m and $73.6m respectively in 2012 and 2013.

THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES also pulled in another $105.5m outside the US over the weekend and now stands at $355.6m globally after just two weeks of release. With the film apparently outpacing its predecessors, Jackson’s film looks on course to repeat the feat managed by AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY, which just broke through the $1bn mark at the worldwide box office.

Whilst comfortably keeping hold of the top spot, other films were hoping to make an impression at the UK box office. PADDINGTON has now been released for four weeks and everyone’s favourite teddy bear impressively earned another £2.5m ($3.9m) keeping them in second place. The marmalade-loving bear has now collated a total of £18.1m ($28.3m).

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: SECRET OF THE TOMB was one of the new entries this week and it secured third place in the UK box office with a debut of £1.9m ($2.9m), failing to repeat the feat of the previous two films in the franchise.

Falling slightly short behind NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM was the Farrelly brothers’ DUMB AND DUMBER sequel, DUMB AND DUMBER TO which earned £1.8m ($2.8m) during its weekend release.

Boxing Day brings a further stack of new releases including EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS, BIG EYES, ANNIE and UNBROKEN, who will all be vying to make a dent on the box office chart. But can anyone knock this Christmas big blockbuster, THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES off its throne? It will certainly be a tough challenge…
