Co-writer Nicole Perlman confirms that Gunn will be writing and directing the second installment.

Guardians of the Galaxy has only just enjoyed its European premiere in London, but Marvel has already revealed it’s to release a sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy in 2017.

Rumours have been rife during the last few days that director James Gunn was writing GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 and was set to direct it and now the official announcement has been made at the Comic Con event in San Diego during a discussion about another of Marvel’s franchises, the AVENGERS.

Josh Brolin has been confirmed to play villain Thanos and he will appear in both AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2.  

The excited director even took to Twitter to confirm the exciting news about the impending sequel:

For those unfamiliar with the plot, the film centres around Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), who befriends a group of misfits, including a raccoon, to save the universe and already, the film has gone down well with film critics.

Throughout the weekend it was the San Diego Comic-Con which was buzzing with excitement around the opportunity for fans of the movie and Marvel to meet and interact with the creators and the cast members of the upcoming Avengers sequel, Age of Ultron.

Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man/Tony Stark), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Chris Evans (Captain America) and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) all attended the popular event.

To the delight of the fans and media, teaser footage from the sequel was shown and included Hulk fighting a giant robot and Thor grabbing Tony Stark by the throat.

Marvel have got a busy couple of years ahead of them with the first Galaxy film in cinemas now, the sequel has been scheduled for July 28th 2017 and the next Avengers film is to be released in 2015.
