For any Game of Thrones fan, the normal year-long wait for the next series is painful enough, let alone when we know the penultimate series was delayed with no guarantee of when it would reign supreme on our screens again. But HBO have finally given us a date to count down to, and the good news everyone, is we only have about 4 more months to wait…

At the end of their teaser, we see that season 7 will premier in the US on the 16th of July, and as with previous series, it will be simulcast in the UK at 2am (17th July for us). Good news for any hardcore fans who can either stay up all night with excitement anyway, or set alarms for that moment we’re all waiting for, but for others who can’t last the following day at work without nodding off at their desks after a late night viewing, we’ll have to avoid all social media for the day. As we know, the internet is dark and full of spoilers.

So what do we know about the next series? Well for a starter it’s going to be 7 episodes rather than the usual 10, but hopefully that means every one will be action-packed – nobody wants a filler-episode anyway. We’re ahead of George RR Martin’s books now, so there’s currently no way to read up and get ahead, but rumours are rife that Winds of Winter will be out at some point this year, and perhaps might reveal a few things yet to be uncovered in series 6.

Based on the teaser trailer where characters recite lines from the previous series, building up to the state of each of the major houses, we really get the sense that the great war is coming soon, and the houses initial power struggles will be nothing in comparison. Cersei says, “anyone who isn’t us, is our enemy” and we see the Tyrell rose sigil set ablaze with wildfire, as per her destruction of Margery and Loras in the season 6 finale. We know that Daenerys has joined forces with the Ironborn to sail across the narrow sea, so hopefully the we’re going to a great battle when the two powerful women finally meet. That vision we’ve seen of the throne room in King’s Landing burned down with snow settling, seems much closer to reality.

Jon Snow finishes the clip saying, “There’s only one war that matters: the Great War. And it is here.”

Winter is finally coming everyone, and it’s in the middle of July.

UK viewers of Game of Thrones, set your alarms, the Season 7 of Game of Thrones will simulcast weekly at 2am from 17th July on Sky Atlantic and online streaming service NOW TV, followed by a repeat at 9pm the same day.
