It’s been a hell of a year for film trailers and we’ve watched our fair share of some of the best rom/com’s, comedies, thriller and more. Some have showcased what has turned out to be the cinematic triumphs of 2014, while others have hinted at what brilliance we can expect in next years film circuit.

Didn’t get to catch them all this year? Don’t worry! We’ve got you covered with out Top 15 Film Trailers of 2014. Let’s get started!

1) Avengers: Age of Ultron

After the ridiculous success of the first Avengers movie, which grossed a whopping $1.518 billion at the box office, fans were just counting down the days for a sequel and went nuts when the first teaser trailer was released a couple months ago. Avengers: Age of Ultron stars our usual cast of superheroes who find themselves in a new battle against the villainous Ultron, voiced by James Spader, after Robert Downey Jr‘s Tony Stark attempts to launch a doormat peacekeeping program.

Taking a seemingly darker, sinister turn in the trailer, audiences get a glimpse at the terror and trauma Ultron creates. Also starring Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Tom Hiddleston and Mark Ruffalo; Avengers: Age of Ultron is our in cinema’s May 2015.

2) Interstellar – 

Christopher Nolan pulled out all the stops for his epic space adventure Interstellar and the trailer seriously didn’t disappoint. Showing an almost dystopian Earth, the trailer gave us just a glimpse of what wonders were to come, but it certainly got our appetite going. Could the brilliant trailer be one of the reasons that Interstellar has already grossed almost $600 million at the box office? Um, yeah. We’d say so.

Starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain, the Interstellar trailer gave us a glimpse at the personal journey to come as well as the stunning Space visuals that went on to astonish it’s audience. Take a look, Interstellar is in cinema’s now!

3) Foxcatcher – 

We know Bennett Miller‘s new drama starring Steve Carrell may not be the most action-packed trailer to come out of this year, but it’s definitely one of our favourites! Carrell’s change in appearance is just one of the reasons why this disturbing drama packs a punch as he takes on the role as slightly unhinged millionaire John du Pont who takes pro wrestler Mark Schultz under his wing as his new sponsor. Channing Tatum is set to give a career changing performance as vulnerable Schultz, who gets some emotional support from his trainer brother, played by Mark Ruffalo. The trailer gives us just a small glimpse of the incredible performances to come from Carrell, who’s intense and disturbing persona looks incredible. Take a look for yourself!

4) The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies –

It would be completely wrong not to mention the trailer behind this years most highly anticipated film. The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies is the last installment from director, Peter Jackson and is set to be the biggest yet! The trailer gives us a sneak peak of the incredible scale of the last chapter of Bilbo’s story and resonates a somber tone to this emotional story. The armies are readying themselves as battle looms, who will make it out alive?

Starring Martin Freeman as Bilbo for one last time, we get to see the hopeful hobbit reach the peak of his journey! Co-staring Richard Armitage, Lee Pace, Luke Evans and Ian McKellen The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies is out this Friday so get a look at the trailer now!

5) Gone Girl – 

Film fanatics went nuts over this next trailer as David Fincher directed his adaptation of Gillian Flynn‘s bestselling book of the same name; Gone Girl. With Elvis Costello’s ‘She’ playing in the background, the Gone Girl trailer showed us a story of misery and despair as bar owner Nick struggles with the aftermath of his wife’s disappearance. Both Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike looked set to give spine-chillingly good performances, the trailer made itself known as one of the most intriguing trailers of the year and in turn, one of our firm favourites! The film itself totally lived up to the trailer hype and solidified Fincher as a suspense genius!

6) Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens – 

It was the trailer Star Wars fans were waiting for, but nothing could prepare them for the brilliance that was the new Force Awakens trailer! With a wonderful sense of tradition while simultaneously being new and exciting, the trailer really did look incredible. Giving us a great glimpse of each new character in full costume, the trailer showcase J.J Abrams new installment of George Lucas‘ epic saga set thirty years after Star Wars: Episode VI Return of The Jedi. We’ve got a long wait for the new movie, which hits theatres December 2015, so we suggest you watch the trailer on loop like we have. 

7) Birdman – 

Combining a sense of realism with whimsical fantasy the Birdman trailer is utterly addictive, we dare you to try and watch it just the once! Introducing audiences into the world of washed-up, former Superhero actor, Riggan, the Birdman trailer gives a small glimpse into just how darkly funny this movie is. Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu with an all star cast including Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts and Edward Norton; the Birdman trailer wows its audience with a fast-pasced, action packed intro into a truly brilliant movie!

8) X-Men: Days of Future Past –

Around seven months ago we were treated to the third and final X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer and it seriously blew our minds. The sheer level of action crammed into a 2:41 minute clip is astounding and got us all really excited for the latest installment of Bryan Singer‘s X-Men franchise. Introducing the next installment, we saw Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) getting sent back in time to gather the X-Men in a desperate attempt to change the past in order to save both human and mutant alike from a disastrous future!

Featuring huge stars like James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Moult, Ellen Page, Peter Dinklage, Halle Berry and Evan Peters; the X-Men: Day’s of Future Past trailer was a force to be reckoned with!

9) Jurassic World – 

The park is open! The buzz around this next trailer has been phenomenal as we’re reintroduced to the world of Jurassic Park twenty-two years after the very first pre-historic nightmare! Audiences get to see the park open its doors once again with a fully functioning world open to the public. As you’d expect, nothing good comes from genetically modified dinosaurs as Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard have to evacuate the park once again while desperately trying to survive. Directed by Colin Trevorrow, the trailer really is a wonderful introduction to the new-age of the franchise! 

10) The Theory of Everything – 

We’re not ashamed to admit that the next trailer made us weep a little bit. The wonderfully emotional trailer for James Marsh‘s The Theory of Everything gets audiences caught up in the magical story of brilliant physicist Stephen Hawkins and his wife Jane. In just 2:43 minutes, audiences are able to attach themselves to this wonderful love story with knockout performances from Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones, truly capturing the essence of love and commitment.  We can’t wait to see the film itself but for now, the trailer will more than do. Grab your tissues and have a look.

11) Exodus: Gods and Kings – 

Ridley Scott gets ready for his next epic swords and sandals adventure with the brilliant trailer for Exodus: Gods and Kings. Telling the famous story of Moses and Pharaoh Ramses, this exciting trailer lends a contemporary hand to this old tale. The scale looks spectacular and Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton are set to give spellbinding performances.  Edgerton in particular looks utterly menacing as the tyrant Ramses, we think he could steal the show in this ancient adventure! Take a look for yourselves. 

12) Nightcrawler – 

The trailer for Dan Gilroy‘s Nightcrawler introduces the dark underbelly of how news rooms get their gritty, often disturbing, footage. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as newbie nightcrawler, Lou Bloom, a creepily determined individual who trawls the streets looking for the grimmest of road accidents, shootings, stabbings or robberies. The trailer gives a brilliant glimpse of what kind of shockingly disturbing performance to come from Gyllenhaal and shows just how deranged he can play!

13) How to Train Your Dragon 2 – 

Who could believe it was almost 11 months ago that the first trailer for the brilliant sequel to How to Train Your Dragon hit the internet and thrilled kids and adults alike?! Despite it’s early release in the year, it’s stuck in our minds as one of the best trailer for animated films to come out of 2014. Revisiting the lovable Hiccup and his dragon Toothless, the new trailer gives a glimpse of their latest adventure as Hiccup discovers his past and struggles to secure his future! With voices from Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler, America Ferrera and Kirsten Wigg, this trailer is full of laughs and of course, dragons! 

14) Guardians of The Galaxy – 

There are two main reasons why fans went nuts over the Guardians of The Galaxy trailer. Firstly, it looked awesome. Seconds, Chris Pratt got buff. Yep, fans couldn’t believe how hunky Pratt got for the role as Peter Quill aka the Star Lord! With all the action you could want, the trailer for this epic space adventure mixed the right amount of humour and adventure that brings in all types of audiences. After seeing the trailer and performances from Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista and Bradley Cooper, we’re not surprised the movie has done so well! 

15) The Grand Budapest Hotel – 

Nobody quite does quirky like Wes Anderson and the trailer for this years The Grand Budapest Hotel, is quite the testament to that fact. Starring Ralph Fiennes, Adrien Brody, Jude Law, William Dafoe, Bill Murray and Edward Norton, the trailer for this whimsical tale is both colourful, delicate, hilarious and crude – all in one wonderful package. As the adventures of Gustave H are explored, so is the tremendous way in which Anderson weaves his stories.
