Top Films of 2017

The new year is upon us and with it, 2017 is bringing some fantastic movies for us to look out for and eagerly feast our eyes upon on the big screen. There are so many movies to cater for all genres and with so many expected for release this year, it is hard to narrow them down to just a select few, but here are the movies that we predict will light up the box office and be definitely worth emptying your wallet for.

THE SEQUELS

This year there will be a whole host of sequels to look out for, which will all be out at different points in 2017. You can expect to see Kate Beckinsale donning her leathers once again in UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS, as she goes on the hunt for the undead. Likewise, Milla Jovovich has her hands full against the looming zombies in RESIDENT EVIL: THE FINAL CHAPTER. Those two films should definitely keep the fans of monster movies happy – or sad if they don’t want that particular franchise to end.

Underworld: Blood Wars

For those looking for a different type of genre, one that boasts monster cars rather than creatures, you will most likely be itching for the release of FAST AND FURIOUS 8 starring Vin Diesel. The latest movie in the extraordinary franchise will be roaring onto the big screen this summer and if that isn’t enough of the Diesel for you, you can also catch him in the also highly-charged action blockbuster xXx 3: THE RETURN OF XANDER CAGE.

Welcome back to Captain Jack! Johnny Depp will be conquering the seas once more in the next movie from the franchise PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: SALAZAR’S REVENGE and rumour has it, a lot of the original cast will be making an appearance in this one – we are keeping our fingers crossed for that.

The long awaited, highly hyped TRAINSPOTTING sequel will finally be hitting the screens 20 years after Danny Boyle‘s cult hit in 1996. T2: TRAINSPOTTING is the followup and we will see Ewan McGregor and the cast reunited again!

T2

Horror fans will look forward to the chills in INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 4, WORLD WAR Z 2, IT and SAW: LEGACY, while there’ll be yet more entries in the Transformers, Divergent and Pitch Perfect series.

How can we mention sequels and not discuss Keanu Reeves in JOHN WICK 2, Harrison Ford‘s return as Deckard in BLADE RUNNER 2049 and Jamie Dornan‘s back on the big screen as Christian Grey alongside Dakota Johnson in FIFTY SHADES DARKER? These films are likely to cause quite the stir as the teaser trailers drop… However, none are likely to dominate the box office like STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII, the next official chapter in the blockbuster space saga.

Of course, there are some other big movies coming up which are sequels and they boast some familiar superheroes you may recognise. Find out more about them below…

THE SUPER HEROES

How can we not mention the huge offering of superhero movies set for release this year?! Those who love seeing their favourite comic book heroes on the big screen, then 2017 will be a good year for you. For those of you who don’t like them – well, good luck! This year, we will see Hugh Jackman hanging up his infamous claws as we say goodbye to Wolverine in LOGAN – someone pass us the tissues! Also, we will get to see the next offering of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: VOLUME 2, which we have such high hopes for after the success of the first one and slinging his way into action will be Tom Holland showing off his spidey skills in SPIDER MAN: HOMECOMING.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

The boys are back in town in the form of Thor and the mischievous Loki in THOR: RAGNAROK. Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston are back in action in the latest sequel, which was shot in Australia during the summer of 2016. Marvel will also square off against DC Comics’ JUSTICE LEAGUE movie starring Ben Affleck‘s Batman, Henry Cavill‘s Superman and of course we can’t wait to see Jason Momoa as Aquaman too! However, move over boys, because Wonder Woman will also be joining you in the movie – and what’s more, Gal Gadot‘s superhero will also be getting her own solo movie set during World War I.

MOVIES TO GO APE OVER

Pardon the pun, but we can’t help but throw these movies into the mix too: KONG: SKULL ISLAND and WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES. Oscar winner Brie Larson will be sharing the big screen with Tom Hiddleston in search of Kong and from what we have seen so far, no expense has been spared on the production of this one. Also, there is a lot of monkey business going on in WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES starring Mark Wahlberg and this looks to draw in the crowd once again after the success of its predecessor.

ANIMATIONS

Animations, animations, animations! They will be bursting at the the seams and we couldn’t be happier about it. We still can’t believe that we are now on the third instalments of CARS and DESPICABLE ME franchises.

Disney Pixar’s next movie COCO is inspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead, and follows the adventures of a 12-year-old boy named Miguel who uncovers a centuries-old mystery… and may lead to an unexpected family reunion.

Will Arnett‘s Batman will be the focus of the next LEGO movie, a spinoff of the 2014 hit animated feature.

In CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS Underpants two fourth graders who are best friends draw comics that they sell on the playground. Their creation, Captain Underpants, becomes real when the duo accidentally hypnotise the school’s mean principal who turns into an actual superhero.

THE BIG HITTERS AND REMAKES

January is the start of award season and with that, all of the talk and big releases will be focused on the top-nominated movies. Expect to see a lot of hype with LA LA LAND starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, MANCHESTER BY THE SEA with the Oscar-tipped Casey Affleck and JACKIE with fabulous Natalie Portman.

Manchester By The Sea

Other big blockbusters include Martin Scorsese‘s SILENCE, Mel Gibson‘s war movie HACKSAW RIDGE, LION starring Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman, THE GREAT WALL with Matt Damon and the uber-talented Denzel Washington in FENCES.

Disney’s live-action reprise of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is undoubtedly going to pull in the audience upon its release. Already the snippets of Emma Watson’s vocals as Belle has caused a stir and also pulling a lot of interest is the remake of THE MUMMY starring Tom Cruise.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has found his orange shorts and will be strutting his stuff on the beach for the film version of the hit TV series BAYWATCH.

The best of the rest include DUNKIRK from the visionary that is Christopher Nolan, which stars Tom Hardy. James McAvoy will be seen in many different ways as he is playing someone with multiple personality disorder in M Night Shyamalan‘s SPLIT.

Dunkirk

Either way, 2017 will no doubt throw up some box office surprises and slumps, but either way, we can’t wait to see them all! Happy cinema-going to you all!
