Last week’s episode ended with Cilla (Sheridan Smith) thinking that her chance of becoming a singer was over. This week’s episode however proved that it wasn’t.

Cilla, now working at The Cavern Club as a coat collector becomes friends with Bobby again. He soon persuades her to get back on stage and we once again see her singing at various clubs, one of which Brian Epstein is an audience member.

At the end of the night, Brian gives Cilla his business card and tells her to come to his office the next day. She does so, but doesn’t tell Bobby.

Brian signs her and with Bobby in tow, they head to London to record Lover is Love as an audition to a man called George. He likes it and decides to release it. Despite how happy she was with the demo, it only charts at number 35.

The next day, Cilla and Bobby go back to see Brian who says she should record a UK version of the cover Anyone who had a heart. Despite Bobby not agreeing, Cilla records the track and it goes to number one in the charts.

Once again another excellent episode with astounding performance from Sheridan Smith and support from Aneurin Barnard as Bobby and Ed Stoppard as Brian Epstein.

This episode left me wishing even more that I was alive in the 60s and that Sheridan Smith should release an album.

We’d love to hear what you thought of episode two.

Cilla concludes next Monday at 9pm.
