Interstellar rocketed at the box office during its opening weekend.

In its opening weekend, INTERSTELLAR, the highly anticipated new film from The Dark Knight director, Christopher Nolan, has soared at the box office earning £5,377,527 across 574 cinemas throughout the UK and Ireland.

With £883, 662 (16 per cent share of the weekend) in IMAX theatres alone the figure is still climbing. This comes as no surprise, as the film is simply outstanding and you can read more on our thoughts about the film in our Interstellar review.

This is the biggest IMAX opening this year and the announcement was made by Josh Berger, the President and Managing Director of Warner Bros Pictures UK.

“Christopher Nolan has pushed the boundaries to take audience on a compelling and original journey into space and we’re thrilled that the incredible word-of-mouth continues to inspire movie-goers to embark on this unique and compelling ride,” said Josh Berger.

Directed by Christopher Nolan, the film is written by Jonathan Nolan and Christopher Nolan and features an all-star cast led by Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) and Oscar winner Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables).

The cast also includes Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty), Bill Irwin (Rachel Getting Married), Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn (Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore), Oscar nominee John Lithgow (Terms of Endearment) Oscar winner Michael Caine (The Cider House Rules), as well as including Casey Affleck, Wes Bentley, Mackenzie Foy, Topher Grace and David Gyasi as part of the main cast.

“Interstellar is a film that has to be experience on the big screen,” said Berger.

The film was produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Lynda Obst with Jordan Goldberg, Jake Myers, Kip Thorne and Thomas Tull serving as executive producers.

The acclaimed director’s behind-the-scenes creative team was led by director of photography Hoyte van Hoytema (Her), Oscar-nominated production designer Nathan Crowley (The Dark Knight), Oscar-nominated editor Lee Smith (The Dark Knight) and Oscar-nominated costume designer Mary Zophres (True Grit). Oscar winner Paul Franklin (Inception) served as visual effects supervisor and Scott Fisher (The Dark Knight Rises) as special effects supervisor.

With a score composed by renowned Oscar winner Hans Zimmer (THE LION KING), Nolan and his team have brought to live a compelling and unique journey into space.
