A new teaser trailer has landed – and not smoothly – for Cars 3, featuring race-car Lightning McQueen (OWEN WILSON) spiralling through the air, similar to the career-ending wreck of his idol from the first film, Doc Hudson (PAUL NEWMAN). In this sneak-peak, we see Lightning initially leading the pack in the high-octane race, only for a new-comer to seemingly come up through the pack. Sparks fly and shards of metal litter the track, as everyone’s favourite race-car takes a beating.
The third installment in the popular franchise, looks set to take the story back on track with Lightning McQueen in the drivers seat, following the disappointing sequel that saw the popular sidekick Mater (LARRY THE CABLE GUY) enter the spotlight as an unlikely spy. While I’m a big fan of Mater as a character, he is much better suited to funny remarks and heart-warming moments that off-set Lightning’s cool, narcissistic persona. The film strayed too far away from the charm of Radiator Springs and lost some of the magic that captured the hearts of fans in the original film. Based on this teaser, it looks like Pixar have found their magic formula again as if history may almost be repeating itself, but instead of McQueen being the underdog, newbie on the scene, he’s the seasoned champ who needs to prove himself again younger racers.
Whilst the teaser takes a more dramatic turn than we typically find in Pixar films, it promises to draw in any child (or adult) who fell in love with McQueen and the residents of Radiator Springs, an astonishing 10 years ago. With the grittier, more emotive Pixar films of late such as Inside Out, Cars 3 looks to be heading in the same direction; a more emotionally-developed, thought-provoking film.
