Remakes of horror classics such as EVIL DEAD and HALLOWEEN make sense, however as the trend of Hollywood reviving old horror franchises to cash in on previous success continues, the plans are getting stranger and stranger. There are some horror remakes nowadays that leave you asking, “why would they bother rebooting that?” This is one of those. The director of CON AIR, EXPENDABLES 2 and LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER is planning to direct a remake of the classic horror, THE BLOB. This director of course being Simon West.

The much mocked and parodied THE BLOB was about a gigantic mass of jelly that rolls through a small town absorbing everything that comes near it into its acidic gelatinous body. The life form is actually from outer space and grows every time it consumes something. It really is a dumb concept, people probably mocked it even in 1958. You will recognise the footage even if you haven’t seen it before as the movie has often been mimicked in shows like THE SIMPSONS.

There may be some reservations as to how this is going to translate to today’s audiences. Some may find out it’s a remake, go on Google, see the monstrosity from 1958 and point-blank refuse to see it. There have been other adaptations with a 1972 sequel, BEWARE! THE BLOB, which was helmed by Larry Hagman, and in 1988, Chuck Russell directed Kevin Dillon in a remake of the original.

So far it is unclear what they may do with the storyline, as there isn’t a whole lot you can do to develop the back story or character of an enormous ball of jelly. Not to mention the question: How is it going to look?  By putting a mainly action focussed director at the helm, they may plan on doing a big explosive action movie. How is that going to work in today’s day and age? There is only so much fancy special effects you can put on a ball of goo to make it look interesting.

Either way, no official details have been released as of yet, but as always, we will keep you up to date with the news as it arrives.
