Without a doubt, Benedict Cumberbatch is one of this year’s top San Diego Comic-Con stars who is making his debut at the popular event.  What have we learnt about the man and his future projects whilst being there? Well, nothing that is too surprising!

The British actor is there to talk about voicing a character in DreamWorks’ PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR and also will be busy discussing Warner Bros.’ THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIESas he plays the part of the necromancer and Smaug the deadly dragon.  But during this time, the Sherlock Holmes star was having to fend off rumours of joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe with whispering words of speculation that he is one of the strong contenders to play Doctor Strange.

Many fans have been keeping their fingers crossed that he will be taking on the role with the powerhouse that is Marvel, but alas, after speaking with MTV about these rumours, Cumberbatch extinguished the gossip-mongering sparks after revealing that despite loving having the opportunity to take on the role, he is already tied up with other commitments which will detain him from working with the major film franchise due to his stint in the West End for HAMLET.

“As far as I’m aware, even if that was the case, it couldn’t work out because I’m doing a little play called ‘Hamlet’ in London, so I don’t think I could even if that was in the cards. It sounds like a fantastic project. It’s a shame if I miss out, but who knows?”

Oscar-nominated star Joaquin Phoenix,  is now heavily rumoured to be taking on the role in Scott Derrickson’s DOCTOR STRANGE.

But maybe in the future we might see the handsome Brit donning the infamous Bat-suit?  The Sherlock star admitted he’d love to take on the part of the classic superhero despite the role being played by Ben Affleck in upcoming superhero movies BATMAN VS SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE and THE JUSTIC LEAGUE which have already reportedly been given to the American actor.

When asked which character he’d most like to play during a Q&A at DreamWorks Animation’s San Diego Comic-Con yesterday, he said:

“Batman, I guess. Yeah.”

The BBC has confirmed that the hit detective drama, which also stars Martin Freeman as Watson, will return next year for a one-off episode that promises to be “one of the biggest mysteries yet”.

Cumberbatch is expected to start filming in January 2015 and will be followed by a three-part fourth series of Sherlock, which will film later in the year.
