Benedict Cumberbatch

There’s not a lot of roles that we can’t imagine Benedict Cumberbatch playing and we say ‘playing’ because in his role of Smaug the Stupendous, he did so much more than just voice the dragon in The Hobbit trilogy.

To celebrate the release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition on Digital HD (also available on Blu-ray 3D and DVD on 3rd November) new deleted scenes and excerpts of previously-unseen behind the scenes action from the Special Features, including a look at the intricate work behind bringing Smaug to life are now available.

In the new footage we see the Sherlock Holmes star writhe around the floor in a skin tight grey motion-capture suit, transforming from a human to a dragon in front of our very eyes. We get to see how he creates the physical motion of the dragon with his stirring voice whilst having a conversation with Bilbo and harbouring his treasure.

The actor’s head movements and facial expressions were as detrimental in his performance as his voice. Take a look at the video below of the transformation and is unfolds before your eyes:

Other deleted clips and behind the scenes footage takes a humourous look at Bombur and a sneak peek at the infamous barrel run.
