Andy Serkis

According to my countdown to STAR WARS EPISODE VII app on my phone (mock me if you will), we have exactly 202 days, 19 hours and 24 minutes until JJ Abram‘s next installment into cinema’s most iconic franchise. There’s still plenty of time for more information to be released  surrounding the project considering we know so little about it. On Thursday evening, we got our first glimpse of who, or more likely what, Andy Serkis‘ character will be.

The photo was released yesterday via Star Wars.com and Andy Serkis will be indeed motion capturing his performance as the newly titled character Supreme Leader Snoke in STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS.

As you can see from the picture above, it’s not quite as exciting as we all hoped, its just Serkis sitting within a motion capture rig, but its important to remember that Serkis is the leading actor and advocate in motion capture technology, with such great performances as Gollum in Peter Jackson’s LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy or Caesar in the new PLANET OF THE APES reboot or my personal favourite Captain Haddock in Steven Speilberg‘s THE ADVENTURES OF TIN-TIN.

As for the character itself, nothing has been confirmed yet apart from the name, but as it’s motion capture, it’s safe to assume that it will indeed be otherworldly and will not be a humanoid character. With a title like Supreme Leader Snoke we can only assume his character will indeed be someone to be reckon with in this new chapter in the STAR WARS series.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens December 18th.
