As deeply tragic as it sounds sometimes the film trailers can be the best part of a movie-going experience, like a support band upstaging the main act sometimes the promise of an upcoming blockbuster can excite you more than the actual film itself. However today rather than focus on the future hits I thought it would be a far more cathartic and enjoyable experience to share and expose those annoying little features that sneak their way into every tediously dull and repetitive trailer and drive us all crazier than the craziest cat lady. Here are my personal gripes:

1) Giving away the entire story in the trailer – I get that in order to capture people’s interest a company needs to thoroughly convey the story to capture the audience’s interest but have they never heard of ‘less is more’. Nothing is more frustrating than spoiler after spoiler as a trailer reveals more than a Jennifer Lawrence leaked pic and leaves just as little to the imagination.

Scarlett Johansson leaked pictures before it was cool.

2) Clunky and inconsistent editing – I work in a cinema so I may need to apologise for being a bit of a nerd here but I can’t be the only person who has a mini stress attack when a scene in a trailer is completely different to the supposed same sequence in a film. I understand that some jokes or action sequences have to be condensed to a snippet in the trailer to convey the jist of what’s happening but there is a definite sense of disappointment  when you sit down to watch the film and realise the scenes and dialogue you saw before are all over the place. It’s the real life equivalent of seeing a plump juicy orgasmic Big Mac being advertised on TV before later being served an anorexic sickly excuse of a burger.

As brilliant as this film was the trailer editing was messier than Lionel.

3) Vague terms – This has to be the biggest ball ache in modern cinema it seems every film that basically has human beings in it and a story based in our universe has the potential to attach the tag of ‘based on true events’ to it. The most annoying tag has to be ‘inspired by true events’ as that can literally cover any single event that can occur in the world, technically Star Wars could be inspired by true events because George Lucas once had a dream about it. That phrase is vaguer than a celebrity big brother contestant’s list of achievements and seems to be heavily used in modern horror films to the point where it almost seems unique to have a scary flick that isn’t supposedly based on a true story.

Inspired by a true event that once occurred in the mind of a fictional character.

4) Generic unimaginative music – when it comes to music there’s less creativity than Man Utd’s midfield as the same old boring generic tracks get churned out over and over again, it’s so formulaic. It seems if there’s a comedy about a group of less than cool guys doing some badass stuff they’ll chuck in some gangster rap for a cheap comical trick (see Horrible bosses 2 or let’s be cops) or if there’s a rom-com it’ll be a twangy acoustic ‘motivational’ track (see Also Love). For all the criticism it’s probably fairly received atleast the new trailer for 50 shades of grey offers something new and clearly appropriate.

5) Adam Sandler -no words necessary.
